Otto Thoman was born in New Orleans January 15, 1843, to Matthias Thoman and Appolonia Sauerberger. His sister was Mrs. Louisa Armbruster. Otto married Eve Deniger, the daughter of John Deniger. They had five children: Louis Edward, Emelie Louisa, Eve Josephine, Otto William, and Laura Mary. He partnered with Florence Pfister in 1866 to create the Pfister & Thoman Company. He became a city council member in 1882 and comptroller in 1888.
