Mathias Thoman was born in 1807 in Germany. He married Appolonia Sauerberger and they came to New Orleans in 1828 where they had three children: Mary Louise Thoman, J, and Otto Thoman. Matthias was a prominent surgeon in New Orleans. He died in 1850.

1850 Census where Mathias Thoman is listed with his wife Abolumis Thoman, daughter "L" 17-yrs, son "F" 13-yrs, and son "O" 7-yrs. Also in the household is J. I. Armbruster (23-yr-old male) and C. Grapps (38-yr-old male). "L" is Mary Louise Thoman. She married John Ignatz Armbruster (J.I. Armbruster). "O" is Otto Thoman.

Otto's mother was Appolonia Sauerberger. His sister was Mrs. Louisa Armbruster. Mattias died in New Orleans in 1850. Otto married the daughter of John Deniger. Created Pfister & Thoman company in 1866 with Florence Pfister. Became a city council member in 1882 and comptroller in 1888.
